The 14th Council of Jos University has approved the appointment of Professor Tanko Ishaya as the new chancellor of the university.


Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi, Deputy Registrar of the University’s Information and Publishing announced the news in a statement on Friday in Jos.
According to him, this development took place after the board of directors deliberated on the recommendations of the joint board of directors and the Senate Selection Committee at a special meeting held on Friday, November 12th.
He said that Mr. Ishaya’s appointment will take effect from December 1st, adding that the term of office of the appointment is five years.
Mr. Ishaya is currently the Deputy vice-chancellor and professor of computer science.
He has a background in mathematics and expertise and experience in data engineering, computer security, and forensics.
He received a bachelor’s degree in 1992, he graduated from Jos University majoring in mathematics education with a second-class degree and began to work as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at Zulu Agricultural College in Kebbi State.
Later he went to the University of Manchester to study for a master’s degree in computers, which he finished in 1997.
He completed his Ph.D. in computer research in 2001 and was promoted to professor of computer science in 2012.
He joined the University of Hull as a lecturer in October 2000. Before returning to Nigeria in 2008, he was the head of the institution’s Internet Computing Center and was a guest professor at Jos University during his vacation.
Professor Tenco was the founding director of the University’s Information and Communication Technology Council and returned to the University of Hull again after a vacation in January 2009.
Professor Tanko returned to Jos University in 2012 at the special request of Jos University as Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and concurrently as the pioneer Head of the University’s Department of Computer Science.
He has served on more than 60 university committees at the University of Hull and Joss University and is a member of several professional bodies. Mr. Ishaya has published more than 40 articles in local and international journals, books, conferences, and research reports.
He has also supervised 5 PhDs, 40 masters, and more than 100 undergraduates in Nigeria and the UK.
Mr. Ishaya is from Zulu, Kebbi State, married his wife Sharon Ishaya happily, and had three children. Mr. Ishaya succeeds Professor Grey Ejikeme, whose term of office of the acting vice president will expire on November 30.
