TETFund Urges Nigerian Students to Protect Campus Infrastructure During Protests

TETFund Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono has urged Nigerian students to protect campus infrastructure during the planned Nationwide protests scheduled to hold from August 1–10 and emphasized dialogue over demonstrations, highlighting recent achievements through negotiations rather than protests.

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny Echono, has called on Nigerian students to safeguard campus infrastructure during the upcoming nationwide protest scheduled from August 1–10.

Echono made this appeal during a meeting with a delegation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by National President Comrade Lucky Emonefe, in Abuja.

Echono emphasized the importance of protecting infrastructure funded by taxpayer money and warned against allowing protests to be hijacked by disruptive elements.

He highlighted the need for a stable academic calendar, as instructed by President Bola Tinubu, and shared TETFund’s plans to construct 36 modern hostel facilities in 2024, with a directive to increase this number to 72 in 2025. Additionally, Echono discussed the conversion of campus buses to CNG and the provision of mass transit buses for students.

Addressing the issue of high electricity bills faced by universities, Echono mentioned ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Power to find alternative solutions. He also revealed that the president had ordered the immediate payment of four months’ salary arrears owed to university staff unions, SSANU and NASU.

Echono urged students to pursue dialogue over protests, noting that President Tinubu is willing to listen to their concerns. Following fruitful discussions, NANS decided against a national protest, with Emonefe expressing confidence in achieving more through dialogue.

He highlighted that previous gains, such as the student loan initiative, were secured through negotiations rather than protests.

Emonefe also requested TETFund’s support in establishing a secretariat for Nigerian students and promoting agricultural projects at universities to generate funds. He assured that NANS would monitor and prevent any attempts to exploit students for protest purposes.
