A National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology was shot dead by a stray bullet while returning home after an exam during a military operation in Lagos.

A National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology, Balogun Sultan, has been killed after allegedly being struck by gunfire during a military operation in Lagos.
Sultan, who was enrolled in the institution’s distance learning programme, was said to be returning home after sitting for an examination when the fatal incident occurred on Tuesday.
According to classmates, students on the programme only come to campus briefly for lectures and examinations before returning home. On the day of the incident, Sultan had just completed a Research Methods exam and boarded a vehicle from the WAEC bus stop, heading towards Lagos Island, where he resided.
Witnesses said soldiers had been deployed to the area following reports of an impending cult clash. During the operation, gunshots were reportedly fired, and Sultan was allegedly hit by a stray bullet while passing through the area.
Videos circulating online showed residents running for safety amid the sound of gunfire. Bystanders attempted to assist the injured student by applying pressure to his wounds before he was rushed to the Military Hospital Yaba for treatment.
Despite undergoing emergency surgery, Sultan was pronounced dead.
Friends and colleagues described him as a quiet, disciplined, and focused student who avoided trouble and was determined to complete his studies. His death has sparked grief and disbelief among students, with many lamenting the loss of a young man who was simply on his way home.
The incident has cast a shadow over the campus community, leaving students and staff mourning a life cut short during what should have been a routine school day.
