Fatal Kebbi Crash Claims Driver, Injures 13 University Students

A fatal accident near Yauri in Kebbi State claimed the life of a commercial driver and injured 13 Usmanu Danfodiyo University students returning from an academic trip, prompting ₦5.25 million in medical support from the Kwara State government as investigations into the crash continue.

A devastating road accident in Kebbi State has claimed the life of a commercial driver and left 13 students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), with varying degrees of injuries. The tragic incident occurred as the students were returning from an academic trip to Ilorin, Kwara State. Their journey was abruptly cut short near Yauri, a town in Kebbi State, when their vehicle collided with another in what has been described as a high-impact crash. The driver died instantly at the scene.

Eyewitnesses say the vehicle lost control due to mechanical failure before swerving into the path of an oncoming truck. Local residents and security personnel were quick to arrive at the scene to assist the victims and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Out of the 13 students involved, eight reportedly suffered bone fractures and other serious orthopedic injuries. The remaining five sustained less severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, where doctors say they are in stable condition.

In a swift show of support, the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced the immediate release of ₦5.25 million to cover the students’ medical bills. According to Wasiu Onidugbe, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, the funds will cater to a wide range of medical needs—including diagnostic tests, scans, surgeries, and rehabilitation.

The university community has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling for improved safety measures during student travel. Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent future tragedies.

The mood remains somber on campus as students, staff, and families continue to rally around the survivors and mourn the loss of the driver, whose identity has not yet been officially released.
