“They didn’t believe I did my work” — FUTO student cries out as lecturer destroys his architecture project

A FUTO architecture student went viral after his lecturer destroyed his project for being “too good,” accusing him of not doing the work himself — an act that sparked outrage and debate over academic integrity and creativity.

A tense incident recently unfolded at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), where an architecture lecturer allegedly destroyed a student’s project, claiming the student couldn’t have created it on his own.

Footage from the confrontation has gone viral, sparking outrage and debate online.

In the circulating video, the student stands beside his lecturer, who uses a stick to smash parts of his architectural model. The student explained that the lecturer accused him of submitting work beyond his ability, adding that it was the third time in one semester his project had been destroyed over similar claims.

“My lecturer didn’t believe I did my work. This is the third time this semester they’ve destroyed my project,” he wrote.

The video has since generated mixed reactions.

@ispeakdefi commented:

“This is why many talented students lose motivation. Once you do something exceptional, someone in authority feels threatened. Instead of praising your effort, they pull you down.”

@KennethUzorma added humorously:

“If you didn’t attend FUTO, you wouldn’t understand why we call it Frequently Under Tension Owerri. 😂”

On the other hand, @heytish_ defended the lecturer’s suspicion:

“This might not be about stifling creativity but maintaining academic integrity. If the lecturer suspected outsourcing, destroying the model may be harsh but was likely meant to discourage dishonesty. The bigger question is why such doubts exist — is it the lecturer’s fault or a deeper issue within the academic system?”

A clip of the incident shared on X (formerly Twitter) shows the lecturer damaging the model while the stunned student watches, as onlookers express disbelief.
