No Likely Strike? Tinubu Assures ASUU Of Better Welfare

Cursory: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has assured ASUU of addressing welfare concerns to prevent strikes. He pledged to enhance Nigerian universities and criticized fake degrees from substandard foreign institutions.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that their welfare will be adequately addressed to prevent them from resorting to frequent strike actions to advocate for their demands.

Tinubu, represented by Ochodo James, the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, made this declaration at the combined convocation of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi (ATBU) in Bauchi. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the underlying causes of strike actions, which have significantly disrupted the academic calendars of Nigerian universities.

Acknowledging the dedication of academics, especially in the university sub-sector, Tinubu pledged to utilize available resources to enhance Nigerian universities in accordance with global standards.

He highlighted the need for sustainable dialogue to permanently end frequent strike actions by staff unions, addressing the root causes of these disruptions.

“We shall do everything within our powers and within our limited resources to ensure that the university in Nigeria is improved in tune with global best practices.

“Nigerian universities have witnessed untold hardship situation over the years due to frequent strike actions. We are now focused on creating an enabling environment for sustainable dialogue in other to bring frequent strike actions by staff unions to a permanent end. We will address some of the root causes of strike in our universities and other tertiary institutions,” he said.

Tinubu also criticized the practice of Nigerians obtaining fake degrees from substandard universities abroad.

The Bauchi State Governor, represented by his deputy Auwal Mohammed Jatau, commended the university’s role in advancing education in the country.

Professor Muhammad Abdul’aziz, the Vice Chancellor of ATBU, expressed appreciation to the federal government for its consistent support in funding university education in Nigeria.
