Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, donated ₦50 million to Joseph Ayo Babalola University to establish a 10-year endowment fund supporting the best female graduating students, with ₦5 million awarded annually under the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Prize for Academic Excellence.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria and wife of President Bola Tinubu, has donated ₦50 million to Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU) as an endowment fund for its best female graduating students.
The announcement was made during the university’s 15th convocation ceremony, where Tinubu was represented by Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, First Lady of Ekiti State. Tinubu also received an honorary doctorate degree at the event.
“Today, in my pursuit and support of education, I hereby donate ₦50 million as an endowment fund to the overall best female graduating students of Joseph Ayo Babalola University,” Tinubu stated. She noted that this year’s overall best graduate, a female student, would be the first beneficiary of the initiative.
Pro-Chancellor Dr. Joash Amupitan revealed that the endowment fund will be distributed over 10 years, with ₦5 million awarded annually to the best female graduate under the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Prize for Academic Excellence.
He said, “Each year, the recipient will receive ₦5 million. This generous initiative underscores our commitment to recognizing and rewarding outstanding achievement. I commend the First Lady for her substantial contribution to this noble cause.”
At the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Professor Olaosebikan Fakolujo celebrated the accomplishments of the graduating students, encouraging them to be exemplary ambassadors of the university and to contribute positively to national development.
“I congratulate all graduates on this significant milestone,” Fakolujo said. “You are now equipped to make positive contributions to Nigeria while embodying the university’s motto, ‘For Knowledge and Godly Service.’”
The event saw the graduation of 626 students with first degrees and 114 postgraduate students. Among the first-degree recipients, 50 graduated with first-class honors, 290 with second-class upper, 215 with second-class lower, 67 with third-class, and four with a pass.
This endowment reinforces the importance of empowering women in education and recognizes their growing contributions to academic excellence.
