Uganda, Kenya Request Verification of Nigerian Students’ Credentials Amid Fake Degree Concerns

Kenya and Uganda are seeking verification of Nigerian students’ academic records due to concerns over fake degrees, following Nigeria’s suspension of degree certificate verification from several countries amid a crackdown on certificate racketeering.

Examination boards in Kenya and Uganda are now requesting verification of academic records from Nigeria for Nigerian students seeking admission into their universities, as revealed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in a document for the 2024 policy meeting.

JAMB emphasized that it would not falsify student records, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary education.

This development follows the Nigerian government’s suspension of degree certificate verification from several countries, including Uganda and Kenya, due to concerns over certificate racketeering.

The suspension came after an investigative report exposed the activities of fake degree mills in the Benin Republic, leading the government to ban the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from certain West African countries.

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, has vowed to eliminate holders of fake degrees from the system, with universities now required to submit their matriculation lists through JAMB to the Federal Ministry of Education within three months of matriculation ceremonies.
