UNICAL has launched an investigation and pledged to punish officials involved in the illegal mobilization of unqualified graduates for the NYSC after the scheme uncovered 101 fraudulently mobilized individuals from the university.

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) in Cross River State has pledged to take action against any officials involved in the illegal mobilization of unqualified graduates for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Udom Ekpoudom, the university’s Pro-Chancellor and a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, announced on Tuesday that an investigation is underway to identify and hold accountable those responsible.
This follows the NYSC’s revelation on Monday that 101 unqualified graduates were fraudulently mobilized for the mandatory one-year service by UNICAL.
In a statement, NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, explained, “The public is hereby informed that 99 individuals, along with two others exempted from service, were fraudulently mobilized by the University of Calabar for NYSC service during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 service years.”
The NYSC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that only qualified graduates, both from local and foreign institutions, are recognized for national service. The statement further added, “As a result, the national service certificates of the listed individuals have been invalidated by the NYSC management.”
In a phone interview, Ekpoudom expressed his dismay over the situation, emphasizing that those involved would face consequences. “The NYSC has done an excellent job in uncovering this. We are currently identifying the staff responsible and will take appropriate actions. These individuals were not genuine students; they forged documents to be deployed.”
He added, “This is just the beginning. The next step is to track down those behind this criminal activity.”
