A male food vendor, Lekan, died Sunday morning at University of Lagos’ College of Medicine, Idi-Araba campus, after electrocution. He disposed of waste, washed hands, touched metal railing near tap, and got shocked.
Eyewitnesses said he was alone; a security guard raised alarm. Students performed CPR, rushed him to campus A&E, where he died around 11 a.m. Police and engineers investigated scene.
The incident sparked outrage; students demand safety checks on campus facilities. “How did this happen? Vendors sustain us,” said a student. UNILAG management expressed sorrow, extended condolences.
In an official statement, Head of Communication Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem urged no speculation, pledged safety commitment. “Investigations ongoing,” she said. Police secure area, cordon off railing.
Students and staff mourn Lekan, calling for improved safety. “Routine audits, proper grounding needed,” said Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, ex-VC. Authorities emphasize vendor safety training.
Family awaits autopsy results.
