The University of Lagos says examinations will continue despite a strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (UNILAG chapter) over unpaid allowances, insisting the union did not follow proper procedures while discussions are ongoing to resolve the issue.

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has criticised the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter in the school to begin a strike, saying the action was declared without following the proper procedures.
According to reports, ASUU at UNILAG announced the industrial action after a meeting held on Tuesday, asking lecturers to stop work from Wednesday. The union explained that the protest was due to what it described as incomplete payment of lecturers’ salaries for January and February.
The chairman of the UNILAG chapter of ASUU, Prof. Idou Keinde, said lecturers received only part of their salaries, excluding important allowances such as the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance. He added that lecturers would not return to work until the full payments are made.
However, the university’s management, through its Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, stated that the union did not follow the appropriate process before announcing the strike. She said the institution is still in discussions with ASUU leaders to resolve the matter, especially the issue of unpaid teaching allowances.
Despite the situation, the university assured students that academic activities would not be disrupted. Management explained that students are currently writing their semester examinations, which are at a crucial stage of the academic calendar.
The university also noted that any disruption could negatively affect students, particularly those preparing for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme, internships, and those planning to proceed to the Nigerian Law School.
While exams will generally continue as scheduled from Thursday, March 12, 2026, the school added that courses where students have already been informed that exams will not take place will be rescheduled.
UNILAG management therefore urged students and staff to remain calm and continue with their normal academic activities while discussions with ASUU continue in order to reach a peaceful solution.
