UNILAG Student Completes 130km Catwalk, Awaits Guinness World Record Confirmation

Ololade Ayelabola, a UNILAG student and model, has completed a 130.62km catwalk to break the Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked by a model, and now awaits official confirmation.

Ololade Ayelabola, a student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and model, has completed a 130.62km catwalk in her bid to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest distance walked by a model.

The 500-level computer science student began her walk on October 1 at UNILAG’s indoor sports centre with the goal of reaching 120km. After achieving this, she pushed forward, covering an additional 10km, completing a total of 2,058 laps inside the venue.

Ayelabola’s motivation stemmed from being twice rejected from fashion events due to her height. Determined to challenge industry stereotypes, she set out on this journey to advocate for greater inclusivity in the fashion world.

“I am walking not just for myself but for all the models who have been sidelined by outdated standards,” she explained. “This is also a chance to showcase the creativity of the Nigerian fashion industry.”

Throughout the walk, Ayelabola modeled designs by Nigerian designers, including a collection from the UNILAG Theatre Arts Department. She was joined by 34 other models in her attempt to highlight the nation’s fashion scene and boost tourism.

Her effort follows a 41-year-old record set by Roberta Brown and Lorraine McCourt, who walked 114.4 km in Dublin, Ireland, in 1983. Ayelabola’s record-breaking achievement now awaits official confirmation from GWR.
