UNILORIN students traveling to Port Harcourt for NYSC were reportedly kidnapped in Delta State, sparking outrage and renewed debates about the safety and relevance of the NYSC program amidst Nigeria’s growing insecurity.

An unspecified number of students from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), en route to Port Harcourt for their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, have reportedly been abducted by unknown gunmen.
This alarming incident came to light through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where a user revealed the ordeal.
The post read: “To serve Nigeria now is a crime. They’ve kidnapped some close Unilorites on their way to Port Harcourt. Can they just scrap this whole NYSC thing?”
In a follow-up comment, the individual mentioned that the students’ last known location was Delta State.
As the news spread, it sparked widespread concern and debate among social media users, who took to the comment section to share their reactions.

Reactions:
• @PortableAyo: “They shouldn’t scrap it. There should be an official bus to transport corpers to their states in batches with armed escorts. If they insist on posting people far from their homes, they need to prioritize safety. This NYSC is risking lives for just 33K? Ridiculous.”
• @thatakwaibomguy: “Scrapping NYSC won’t happen because it benefits too many pockets. But honestly, the program has lost its purpose and is now just a meaningless rite of passage.”
• @Smallnimi_NF: “This is tragic, but scrapping NYSC won’t solve Nigeria’s security issues. Are only NYSC members being kidnapped? Maybe corpers should serve in their home states to reduce risks.”
• @Asiwajulhannie: “With the insecurity in the East and North, posting people there feels reckless. Kidnapping almost seems inevitable at this point.”
• @NurdeanO: “Is it only NYSC members who get kidnapped? Let’s address the bigger problem of insecurity in the country first.”
• @CEORECIPES1: “The mindset of the black man is baffling. Instead of preparing for the inevitable, we live in denial, thinking ‘it won’t happen to me.’”
• @Xstream_ist: “Our leaders have failed us. Imagine parents being told to prepare ransom money if their child gets kidnapped while serving the country. How much longer will we tolerate this?”
The incident has reignited calls for a review or restructuring of the NYSC program, with many questioning its relevance and the safety of participants in light of Nigeria’s growing insecurity.
