Imoleayo Ezekiel Adeniran, the Registrar of UNIMED in Ondo State, was allegedly assassinated at his Akure residence by unknown assailants who forced poison into his mouth, prompting a police investigation into what is believed to be a targeted killing.

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday when Imoleayo Ezekiel Adeniran, the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, was found dead at his private residence in Akure.
The incident occurred in the “Olopa to Di Woli” area along Ondo Road, shocking both the university community and residents of the area.
In a statement, the university described the news of his death as devastating, stating that he had been at work as recently as Monday, July 14, 2025. “The cause of death is still under investigation,” the statement added. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the entire UNIMED community.”
According to a police source, Adeniran was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants who emerged from a nearby bush after he stepped out to investigate a noise on his rooftop. The attackers reportedly overpowered him and forced a liquid substance, believed to be poison, into his mouth before fleeing the scene.
He was found unconscious in his compound and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His remains have since been deposited at Divine Haven Mortuary in Akure. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiry.
Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident and classified it as a targeted killing. “Two men reportedly emerged from the bush and administered a substance into his mouth. We are actively pursuing those responsible,” he stated.
Adeniran was appointed as the third substantive Registrar of UNIMED on January 6, 2025, and was still serving in that role at the time of his death.
