The University of Calabar (UNICAL) suspended Dr. Joseph Idung for allegedly failing to refund money collected from students, marking the second lecturer suspended for misconduct within a week.

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended Dr. Joseph Idung, a lecturer from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, over allegations of misconduct.
According to reports, Dr. Idung allegedly failed to refund money he collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).
The university’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, confirmed the suspension in an official letter addressed to Idung on Monday.
This development comes just days after the suspension of Dr. Joseph Akpan, the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology. Dr. Akpan was found guilty of tampering with students’ scores in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology), according to findings from the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC). His suspension took effect on October 8, 2024.
Expressing the university’s dismay, Egbe criticized Idung’s failure to return the allegedly extorted funds.
“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, has directed his immediate suspension to allow a thorough investigation by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU),” Egbe stated.
He added that Dr. Idung has been ordered to return all university property in his possession to the department head and is barred from entering the campus except when summoned by ACTU.
The university has also instructed the Bursar to place Dr. Idung on half salary for the duration of the suspension.
