UNIZIK has responded to the tragic death of 100-level Law student Chioma Ajana—allegedly caused by delayed access to insulin—by suspending involved medical and security staff, dismissing the hostel supervisor, and launching a full review of its partnership with ELMADA Hostel, while pledging stronger student welfare reforms.

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has publicly addressed the heartbreaking death of Chioma Ajana, a 100-level Law student, whose passing on July 9, 2025, has stirred widespread grief and outrage across campus and social media.
According to multiple sources close to the incident, Chioma reportedly died from complications related to diabetes, after allegedly being denied timely access to her insulin medication—a situation that many believe could have been prevented with faster medical intervention and better emergency protocols.
In response to growing public concern and internal investigations, Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arinze Umobi, issued an official statement detailing the university’s initial disciplinary measures and next steps aimed at accountability and reform.
🛑 Immediate Actions Taken:
- Suspension of medical and security personnel who were on duty at the UNIZIK Medical Centre at the time of the incident. These individuals will be suspended for a period of three months while a thorough investigation is conducted to determine their level of negligence or failure to act.
- Immediate dismissal of the hostel supervisor responsible for holding the spare key to Chioma’s room at ELMADA Hostel, allegedly contributing to the delay in accessing her room during the medical emergency.
- A formal review of UNIZIK’s partnership with ELMADA Hostel has been initiated. The university is reassessing the hostel’s operational standards, crisis response protocols, and management accountability.
🎓 University’s Assurance
Prof. Umobi stressed that the university is taking the matter with the utmost seriousness, promising transparency in the ongoing investigation and pledging to improve student health services, emergency response systems, and accountability structures across campus.
“The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority,” he said. “We owe it to Chioma’s memory — and to every student — to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”
The university community continues to mourn the loss of Chioma Ajana, described by friends and classmates as a brilliant, kind-hearted young woman with a promising future in the legal field.
