According to the New York Post, 18-year-old Aurora Sky Castner, who was born in prison, has achieved remarkable success by graduating as the top student in her high school class.
She will be attending Harvard University in the upcoming fall semester. Aurora, who hails from Montgomery County, Texas, was born in Galveston County Jail when her mother was serving her sentence.
The Houston Chronicle reported that she graduated third in her class at Conroe High School. In her application essay to Harvard, Aurora truthfully revealed her birth in prison.
“I was born in prison,” she said.
She attributed her accomplishments in life to her mentor, Mona Hamby, who has been an influential figure for the past decade.
Mona shared how she first became involved in Aurora’s life, recalling that she received a paper about her, which highlighted Aurora’s admiration for Rosa Parks, her fondness for tacos from Dairy Queen, and her love for reading.
According to Mona, she immediately recognized Aurora’s potential and felt compelled to provide her with more support than just a weekly lunch.
“I was given a paper about her. Her hero was Rosa Parks, her favourite food was tacos from Dairy Queen and she loved to read. I thought this sounds like a bright little girl,” Hamby told Houston Chronicle.
“She told me: “I’ve been to jail.” I said: “No, that can’t be right,”. I knew that I can’t just go eat lunch with this kid once a week, she needed more,” she added.
Aurora expressed gratitude for Mona’s guidance, acknowledging the value of both the lessons Mona imparted and the experiences she had prior to meeting her.
Mona went above and beyond by taking Aurora for her first salon haircut, helping her obtain glasses, and arranging a visit to Harvard’s campus in March 2022.
This trip further fueled Aurora’s passion for the prestigious university. Growing up, Aurora developed a strong passion for reading at an early age. She also joined her high school’s Academy for Health and Science Professions.
“There was something satisfying about having all As and having that accomplishment,” she said. “Grades just meant a lot to me.”
Ms Castner told the publication that she is interested in studying psychology and philosophy at Harvard.
“I am beyond excited to be attending Harvard College in the fall,” the teen wrote. “… I cannot wait to meet my fellow classmates so do not be afraid to reach out!”
Aurora’s inspiring journey from being born in prison to achieving academic excellence has captured the attention of many. Her story serves as prove that we should not allow our situations to define our life and also shows the transformative power of mentorship and determination.
