Visually Impaired Mother’s Determination Secures Son’s Education

A visually impaired Kenyan mother, Stella Kadzo, walked with her son to secure his school admission despite lacking fees, and her determination inspired officials and the community to fully sponsor his education up to university level.

Stella Kadzo, a 54-year-old visually impaired woman from Kilifi, Kenya, walked to Shimo La Tewa High School with her 18-year-old son, Teddy Kahindi, to secure his Grade 10 slot despite lacking school fees and necessary materials. Teddy scored 53 points in the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and was accepted into the school, but his mother couldn’t afford the KSh 53,544 annual fee.

Kadzo, who relies on begging and goodwill from strangers, had been struggling to provide for her five children. Her determination and faith in her son’s future moved the school principal, Mathew Mutiso, who assured them the slot would be held.

The heartwrenching story sparked widespread outrage and support. Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs paid the full year’s school fees, and the Malindi MP contributed KSh 30,000 towards the following year’s fees. The Kilifi County Government also pledged to cover Teddy’s education up to university level.

Teddy, who dreams of becoming an artist, was overwhelmed with joy upon learning of the support. He promised to work hard and excel in his studies to help his mother and others in need.

Kadzo’s story highlights the challenges faced by many Kenyans in accessing education. Despite these obstacles, her determination and the kindness of strangers have ensured her son’s bright future.

The community’s response to Kadzo’s story demonstrates the power of collective support in making a difference in someone’s life.
