WAEC has announced that only 38.32% of candidates passed the 2025 WASSCE with credit in at least five subjects including English and Mathematics, marking the lowest performance in five years due to new anti-malpractice measures like CBT and serialisation.

Yaba, Lagos State – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, revealing the poorest performance recorded in the last five years.
According to WAEC, only 38.32% of candidates secured credit passes or higher in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a significant drop compared to previous years.
WAEC Nigeria’s Head of Office, Amos Dangut, announced the results on Monday, August 4, 2025. The examination, conducted from April to June 2025, saw 1,969,313 candidates sit for the exams. Out of this number, 754,545 candidates (38.32%) passed with credit in a minimum of five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
This year’s performance is the lowest since 2020, and WAEC attributes the decline to new anti-malpractice strategies, including the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and serialisation of examination papers.
“These innovative methods were introduced to curb examination malpractice,” said Dangut.
WASSCE Performance Trend (2020 – 2025):
- 2020: 65.24% passed with credit in 5 subjects including English and Mathematics
- 2021: 81.7%
- 2022: 76.36%
- 2023: 79.81%
- 2024: 72.12%
- 2025: 38.32%
Notably, 87.24% of candidates in 2025 achieved credit and above in five subjects regardless of whether English and Mathematics were included. However, the benchmark for university admission typically requires credit in both core subjects.
