Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal has resolved years of unpaid examination debts, prompting WAEC and NECO to release long-withheld SSCE results for thousands of students after five years, marking a major step in his broader education reform and state-of-emergency initiative aimed at revitalising the state’s public education system.

After five years of painful academic stagnation and uncertainty, thousands of students in Zamfara State have finally received their long-awaited Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results. These results, previously withheld by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) due to unpaid examination fees, have now been released following a decisive intervention by Governor Dauda Lawal. The debts—accrued from 2014 to 2018 for NECO and from 2018 to 2022 for WAEC—were left unresolved by successive administrations, leaving countless students unable to pursue higher education or employment opportunities.
Governor Lawal’s administration took swift action as part of its broader mission to rescue the state’s collapsing education system. In November 2023, the governor declared a state of emergency on education, signaling his administration’s commitment to transformative reforms. Since then, more than 500 public schools have undergone renovation and received vital learning resources. Teachers have been retrained and upskilled to ensure the delivery of quality education at all levels.
The release of these withheld results represents a turning point for Zamfara’s educational landscape, reigniting the academic aspirations of affected students and restoring confidence in public education. Families, educators, and civil society leaders across the state have commended the governor’s bold leadership, describing it as a beacon of hope in a region long plagued by neglect and poor governance in education.
With this milestone, Governor Lawal has not only corrected a grave injustice but also laid a firm foundation for long-term educational advancement and youth empowerment in Zamfara State. His administration’s resolve to prioritize education is now seen as a model for other states grappling with similar challenges.
