Zimbabwean student Shamiso Mutsahuni won a bronze medal in the senior category at the 7th African Spelling Bee in Abuja, showcasing exceptional skill and bringing pride to her country.

Shamiso Mutsahuni, a student at Irene Christian College, has proudly represented Zimbabwe on the continental stage by securing third place in the senior category at the 7th African Spelling Bee competition held in Abuja, Nigeria.
The event, which ran from April 9 to 13, brought together top spelling champions from eight African countries: Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Zambia, Benin, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Uganda, and Ghana. Mutsahuni showcased remarkable composure, focus, and a deep command of vocabulary, standing out among some of the continent’s brightest young minds.
Her impressive performance earned her the bronze medal and a trophy, trailing only behind two Nigerian contestants who claimed the gold and silver positions.
“Competing in the senior category against Africa’s best, Shamiso’s exceptional performance placed Zimbabwe on the winners’ podium. Her resilience and brilliance were evident throughout the challenging rounds,” said Zimbabwe Spelling Bee founder James Bayanai in a statement.
The Zimbabwean Spelling Bee delegation extended congratulations to all participants, giving special recognition to Mutsahuni — affectionately known as “Shami” — for her historic achievement and for proudly flying the national flag high.
“As a nation, we celebrate your resilience, brilliance, and determination. You’ve not only made us proud, but also inspired a generation of young Zimbabweans to believe in the power of words,” the secretariat added.
Other outstanding students who represented Zimbabwe in Abuja include Ivainashe Mbanda and Chelsea Chingaira from Kyle College, Lauren Phillips from Uppervale College, Anisha Zvina from Goldridge, and Mufaro Munyaradzi from Celebration International School. In the junior category, Mbanda narrowly missed a podium finish, coming in fourth after a tightly contested round.
Mutsahuni’s success stands as a testament to Zimbabwe’s potential to nurture exceptional young talent capable of excelling on international platforms.
