12 UNN Student Research Groups Attracts N12m from World Bank

Cursory: The World Bank’s ACE-SPED has awarded N12 million in seed grants to 12 student research groups at UNN for innovative ideas in sustainable energy and power development. The grants support research aligned with ACE-SPED’s innovation objectives, with a focus on transitioning successful projects into businesses.

The World Bank’s Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED) has awarded N12 million in seed grants to 12 student research groups at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

During the award ceremony held at UNN on Tuesday, the Director of ACE-SPED, Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, informed journalists that the grants were given to selected student research teams who have come up with innovative ideas for sustainable energy and power development. He highlighted that the 12 research areas presented promising prospects for commercialization and would offer solutions to energy and power challenges in the African sub-region.

Prof. Ejiogu, who also serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UNN, explained that the ACE-SPED Innovation Seed Grants aim to financially support research projects aligned with the innovation objectives of the Centre. These objectives include electric power system development, renewable energy, waste-to-energy conversion, energy conservation, management, resource assessment and forecasting, and sustainable energy.

Furthermore, Prof. Ejiogu mentioned that the selected research groups would be closely monitored and provided with additional funding to help them transition into businesses and companies if they succeed in future competitions. He emphasized that ACE-SPED is not solely focused on theoretical research but also engages students and staff in entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives.

In his words: “The ACE-SPED is not just a theoretical centre of research. By our mandate, we also engage students and staff in issues such as entrepreneurship and innovation.”
