26-Year-Old Becomes First Nurse in Her Family and Begins PhD at US University

Tanasha Wyckoff, a 26-year-old from Birmingham, became the first nurse in her family after earning her degree from Troy University and is now beginning a PhD in Family Nurse Practice at Baylor University, reflecting on her journey of faith, resilience, and growth through nursing.

Tanasha Wyckoff, a 26-year-old from Birmingham, has become the first nurse in her family after earning a Bachelor of Nursing from Troy University in 2021. Now, she embarks on a new academic chapter, starting a Doctorate in Family Nurse Practice at Baylor University.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Tanasha reflected on her journey, sharing the challenges and rewards of her nursing career, including her experiences as a travel nurse. She described nursing as more than a profession, calling it a “calling” that inspires her to grow stronger, more compassionate, and resilient every day.

Tanasha emphasized how working with patients has been both humbling and enriching, as each interaction has taught her valuable lessons in empathy and perseverance. With two years of travel nursing behind her, she highlighted the importance of embracing new experiences, noting that every assignment—at leading hospitals across the U.S.—brought unforgettable memories and lasting friendships.

Looking ahead, Tanasha expressed excitement about joining Baylor University’s doctoral program, describing it as a significant milestone in her career. She credited faith, hard work, and support from loved ones for guiding her through challenges and opening new doors.

“I’m grateful for every opportunity and for the people who have stood by me. Through it all, God has been my source of strength,” she said, looking forward to the positive impact she hopes to make in healthcare.
