26-Year-Old Shavani Naicker Becomes UKZN’s Youngest PhD Graduate in Applied Mathematics

Shavani Naicker, 26, became UKZN’s youngest PhD graduate in Applied Mathematics, earning top honors for her pioneering research in theoretical physics and now serves as a postdoctoral fellow dedicated to inspiring future scientists.

Shavani Naicker, a brilliant 26-year-old scholar, has made history at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa, by becoming the youngest person in her cohort to earn a PhD in Applied Mathematics. Her academic milestone was achieved during UKZN’s 2025 Autumn graduation, where she was honored for her groundbreaking research in theoretical physics and gravitational studies.

Naicker began her journey at UKZN with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Astrophysics, followed by an Honours and Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics—each completed with summa cum laude distinctions. Her doctoral research, supervised by Professor Sunil Maharaj and Dr. Byron Brassel, delved into Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, a complex extension of Einstein’s theory of relativity that examines gravity in higher dimensions.

Her work contributed new solutions to nonlinear equations that help explain the behavior of stars and black holes in extreme gravitational environments, positioning her research as a valuable asset in global astrophysics and cosmology.

Recognized for her academic excellence, Shavani was awarded the prestigious South African Women in Science Award (SAWiSA) under the DSI-Esther Mahlangu Fellowship, which includes a R95,000 grant to further her studies.

Now serving as a postdoctoral fellow at UKZN’s Astrophysics Research Centre, Naicker continues her mission to expand the frontiers of space science. She hopes to become a professor and mentor future generations of scientists, especially young women aspiring to excel in STEM fields.

Shavani Naicker’s story is a powerful reminder of how determination, curiosity, and education can break barriers and redefine what’s possible.
