40 Million Sat For NECO Exams In 22 Years – Registrar

The Registrar of National Examinations Council (NECO), Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, has said over 40 million Nigerians have sat for the council’s examinations in the last 22 years of its establishment.

Wushishi said this when the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday at the council’s Headquarters in Minna, the Niger State capital.

He said the examination body as the largest indigenous examination body in Nigeria could not afford to compromise standard and integrity in the conduct of its examinations.

He, however, lamented that the examinations had been threatened by insecurity in recent years which had raised fear among officials of the council. He appealed to government for support to protect the welfare of the staff.

Earlier, the NUJ chairman, Abu Nmodu, said the visit was to familiarise with the registrar and the council as part of journalists’ responsibilities to hold public office holders accountable.

Nmodu said the union was working to establish a fact-checking centre at its secretariat in Minna to curb the spread of fake news.
