Several Kwara State University students narrowly escaped harm when their 18-seater bus caught fire and was completely destroyed in Ilorin due to an engine spark, prompting fire officials to urge routine vehicle checks.

Several students from Kwara State University, Malete, narrowly avoided tragedy on Wednesday morning when the bus they were traveling in caught fire in Ilorin.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:54 a.m. along the Ilorin–Sobi Road, near the Akerebiata axis. The 18-seater vehicle, bearing registration number XUF 134 ZD, was completely destroyed by the flames as the students were en route to the university’s main campus.
According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene near Sobi Barracks and successfully extinguished the blaze. Unfortunately, the vehicle was already fully consumed by the time they arrived.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the fire was triggered by a spark in the engine compartment, which quickly spread and engulfed the entire bus,” Adekunle stated.
The Director of the State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, extended sympathy to the bus owner and urged all motorists to perform regular vehicle checks before setting out on any trip, emphasizing the importance of preventive maintenance to avoid such dangerous incidents.
