The National Open University of Nigeria will graduate 56 inmates alongside thousands of other students at its 15th convocation, highlighting its commitment to inclusive education, rehabilitation, and second chances through accessible learning.

The National Open University of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive education as 56 inmates from correctional centres across the country are set to graduate during its 15th convocation ceremony.
Speaking at a pre-convocation briefing in Abuja, the Vice-Chancellor, Uduma Uduma, explained that the initiative is designed to promote inclusion, offer second chances, and drive national transformation through education.
The convocation, scheduled for April 18, will take place simultaneously across NOUN study centres nationwide, with the inmates forming part of the 24,575 graduating students—highlighting the university’s wide reach and flexible learning model.
Uduma emphasized that providing education to inmates reflects the belief that no one is beyond redemption and that access to knowledge is a fundamental right regardless of circumstances. He noted that NOUN’s Open and Distance Learning system has enabled academic programmes to reach correctional facilities, removing barriers related to location and social status.
According to him, the inmates’ graduation represents genuine academic achievement and personal growth, not just a symbolic gesture. He added that the programme helps restore dignity, rebuild identity, and support reintegration into society after incarceration.
The Vice-Chancellor described NOUN as a transformative force in Nigeria’s education sector, attracting a diverse population of learners, including workers, women, and other non-traditional students.
He also stated that certificates will be issued immediately after the convocation as part of efforts to improve efficiency and student services, while calling on stakeholders, especially the media, to continue supporting initiatives that expand access to education nationwide.
