UNILAG, UNN, four others to receive €1.8 million grant from EU

Cursory: Six Nigerian universities, including UNILAG, UNN, UNIPORT, EBSU, and two others, will receive €1.8 million each from the EU-funded Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme. This funding aims to boost green and digital skills development within the universities. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Education’s Director of Press & Public Relations, Folosade Boriwo.

Six Nigerian universities are set to receive a significant financial boost from the European Union (EU). The University of Lagos, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Port-Harcourt, Ebonyi State University, and two other undisclosed universities will each be granted €1.8 million. This funding comes as part of the EU-funded Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme and is designated for projects aimed at developing high-level green and digital skills.

Folosade Boriwo, the Director of Press & Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, made the announcement following an agreement signed by Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, at the Global Gateway High-Level Event on Education in Brussels, Belgium. This agreement paves the way for EU funding to support these six Nigerian universities.

These universities are among the 15 educational institutions selected to benefit from the 15 Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme Projects funded by the EU, totaling €27 million under the flagship Youth Mobility for Africa initiative.

The projects encompass various initiatives, including the CB4EE and GREEN STEM projects at the University of Lagos, the CREATE-Green Africa project at the University of Port-Harcourt, the GENES II and ORPHAN projects at Ebonyi State University, and the HCE Solutions project at the Federal University of Technology and the University of Nigeria.

“The EU has allocated €1.8 million to each of the six Projects under the Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme, providing a total of €27 million in funding. These Projects, to be facilitated by various Nigerian Universities, aim to enhance learning mobility opportunities for Students, Trainees, and Staff across the Continent, focusing on the development of high-level green and digital skills.

“The participating Nigerian Universities include the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the CB4EE and GREEN STEM projects, the University of Port-Harcourt for the CREATE-Green Africa project, the Ebonyi State University for the GENES II and ORPHAN projects, and the Federal University of Technology and the University of Nigeria for the HCE Solutions project. Each University’s participation underscores the collaborative effort towards advancing Education and skill development in Africa,” the statement read in part.

During the Global Gateway High-Level Event on Education in Brussels, an exciting initiative was unveiled by EU Commissioner for International Partnership, Commissioner Urpilainen. The Africa-Europe Youth Academy was launched as a pivotal component of the Youth Action Plan in EU external relations.

This academy is designed to provide valuable opportunities for both formal and informal learning and exchanges between young people in Africa and Europe. Its primary goal is to enhance leadership skills and establish networks among youths across the two continents.

Moreover, Nigeria is poised to benefit from the regional Team Europe Initiative on Opportunity-Driven Skills and Vocational Education and Training in Africa. Recently introduced, this initiative aims to align vocational training programs at the country level with tangible employment opportunities generated by Global Gateway investments.
