In an inspiring achievement, 13-year-old Nigerian Year eight pupil, Tomisin Olawepo-Hashim, residing and studying in the United Kingdom, has advanced to the final stage of the National Chinese Speaking Competition.
The exciting news was announced on the school’s website; celebrating Tomisin’s remarkable journey to the prestigious competition’s final, despite facing stiff competition from over 40 schools across the nation.
“We are thrilled to announce that Upper Fourth student Tomisin Olawepo-Hashim has made it to the forthcoming British Council National Chinese Speaking Competition final!
“Out of more than 40 schools nationwide, Olawepo-Hashim has demonstrated exceptional talent and diligence throughout the rigorous two-week heats. Her advancement to the final round is a testament to her unwavering commitment and outstanding linguistic skills. In a statement on her LinkedIn page, Tomisin expressed her elation at being selected as a finalist for the National Chinese Bridge Speaking Competition. She attributed her success to her passion for human rights, performing arts, global studies, and public speaking.
Reflecting on her journey, Tomisin shared her gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged the support of her Chinese teacher and her mother, Funmi Adewara.
She said, “I am overjoyed to announce that I have been selected as a finalist for the National Chinese Bridge Speaking Competition! I am so excited right now that all I want to do is dance!
“Many, teenagers across the United Kingdom entered this competition, and delivered a two-minute speech in Mandarin, answered questions, and translated sentences. It was not limited to year groups, but how long the student had been learning the language for: meaning that I had to compete against lots of older teenagers who seemed so confident and well-spoken! However, I was also confident in the way I presented myself, and I think my familiarity with the text also gave me a winning edge!I’m so grateful to God for this opportunity, and again thanks to my Chinese Teacher and my Mum, Funmi Adewara! I promise to make you all proud.”
