Four Nigerian professors have been appointed to key positions at The Gambia’s University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), following a recommendation from a task force established by the ministry’s Governing Council.
The Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) has announced the appointment of four Nigerian professors to key roles at The Gambia’s University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET).
Dr. Yusuf Yakub, NTAC’s Director-General (D-G), made the announcement on Saturday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by The Gambia’s Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Prof. Gomez Pierre.
Yakub explained that the expertise of the four professors, who are also Technical Aid Corps (TAC) volunteers, led to the formation of a task force by the ministry’s Governing Council. This move followed a report from the task force recommending the professors for senior positions at the university.
He added that the task force was established to review the current TAC volunteers in The Gambia and to fill key vacancies at USET, ensuring its continued smooth operation.
According to Yakub, the Gambian Ministry of Higher Education has formally requested the endorsement of Nigerian authorities for these appointments. The request was sent to the Nigerian Mission in Kanifing and copied to NTAC’s D-G, and was received in Abuja on Friday.
The appointments come as the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor of USET, Prof. Samuel Owusu-Ofori, is set to end on September 30. The selected professors and their new roles are as follows: Prof. Nazmat Surajudeen-Bakinde as Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yusuf Abdulfatah as Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Akinlabi Oyetunji as Director of Research and Grants, and Prof. David Gundu as Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance.
