Young Man Who Worked as a Gateman and Teacher to Fund His Education Graduates with First-Class Honors

Balogun Emmanuel Olorunfemi, a determined Nigerian who worked as a gateman, teacher, and tutor to fund his education despite immense challenges, graduated with a first-class degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology from FUTA, earning a CGPA of 4.58.

Balogun Emmanuel Olorunfemi, a resilient young Nigerian, has defied the odds to graduate with a first-class Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, earning an impressive CGPA of 4.58 from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Emmanuel expressed deep gratitude for the support he received and his determination to overcome numerous challenges.

In 2017, Emmanuel gained admission to FUTA, embarking on what would become a difficult but rewarding academic path. Arriving in Akure with no place to stay, he was offered accommodation and a teaching position by Mr. Fadare Tolulope, a kind-hearted school proprietor in Ilara-Mokin.

While balancing academics, Emmanuel faced personal struggles, including his mother’s partial stroke, which affected her ability to work. To support himself and his family, he took on multiple jobs, including teaching, providing home tutoring services, and running a laundry business.

During his second year, Emmanuel’s life took a positive turn when a generous friend and their family welcomed him into their home. This stability allowed him to focus more on his studies, although he continued working tirelessly to fund his education.

The challenges mounted during his third year, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emmanuel returned to live with Mr. Fadare, who had moved his property management business to Akure. To sustain himself, Emmanuel took on a full-time teaching position while maintaining his other side jobs.

Financial setbacks, including the withdrawal of tuition support from an organization, caused a dip in Emmanuel’s CGPA and left him in a dire situation. At his lowest point, he contemplated giving up. However, the encouragement of a mentor and the unwavering support of his “departmental mother” reignited his resolve.

To make ends meet, Emmanuel worked as a night-shift security guard while continuing his teaching and tutoring roles. Despite the demanding schedule, he remained focused on his academics, even taking additional courses to graduate with his peers.

Through faith, determination, and the support of kind-hearted individuals, Emmanuel triumphed. He graduated with first-class honors, a testament to his perseverance.

“The journey was not easy, but by the grace of God and the support of kind-hearted individuals, I made it. I hope my story inspires others to keep pushing, no matter the challenges they face,” Emmanuel said.

His story is a powerful reminder that resilience, hard work, and a supportive community can lead to extraordinary success, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
