Justine Akorfa Dagadu, a young Ghanaian woman, won a $328,000 scholarship to study at MIT, becoming the first person from her village to attend university and hopes to use her education to address health and economic challenges in developing communities.

A young Ghanaian woman, Justine Akorfa Dagadu, has made history by winning a $328,000 scholarship to study at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), becoming the first person from her village to attend university.
Hailing from the deprived community of Agbogbloshie in Accra, Justine secured a full scholarship worth $82,000 per year for four years to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering and International Development at MIT.
In a Facebook post, Justine shared her inspiring journey from a disadvantaged background to one of the world’s top universities. She is the eldest of three children, with her father a retired driver and her mother selling local foods to support the family.
Despite the challenges of growing up in a struggling community, Justine’s parents worked tirelessly to ensure she received a quality education. Their support, along with her desire to bridge the gaps created by social inequalities, fueled her academic ambitions.
Justine attended Keta Senior High School (KETASCO), where she excelled in General Science, graduating in the top 1% of her class in 2019. Although further education seemed financially out of reach, her hopes were reignited when she joined the Young Achievers Foundation Ghana (YAF Ghana) Scholars Program in 2021, which helped her unlock her full potential.
Now, as the first from her community to study at MIT, Justine sees this achievement as a chance for personal growth and a beacon of hope for other children from similar backgrounds. She aspires to use her degree to tackle health and economic development challenges in the developing world and give children in disadvantaged communities a better chance at success.
Justine expressed her heartfelt gratitude to YAF Ghana, MIT Alumni in Ghana, and the KETASCO Past Students Association in Ghana and North America, for their unwavering support in making her dream a reality.
