A Ghanian man, George Asiamah who failed his WAEC exams with 4 Fs and 3 Es, persevered, eventually earning an Economics degree, a Commonwealth Scholarship, and a PhD in Sustainability Science and Public Policy from the University of Sheffield.

A young Ghanaian man, George Asiamah, transformed his academic struggles, including failing his WAEC exams with 4 Fs and 3 Es, into a remarkable journey, eventually earning a PhD from the University of Sheffield in the UK.
George shared on Facebook how, despite his poor junior high grades and challenges in gaining admission to senior high school, he eventually attended a public school with support from his uncle. Initially focused on studying General Science, he shifted to Business, inspired by his uncle’s advice.
To support his studies, his uncle gifted him a bicycle, which motivated George to attend classes regularly. However, his progress was interrupted when his school discontinued the Business program, leading him to lose interest and ultimately score poorly on his WAEC exams.
With renewed determination, George improved his study habits, earned an Economics degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and even served as President of the Economics Students’ Association and a Teaching Assistant.
George’s commitment paid off with a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Sustainable Development at Queen’s University Belfast, culminating in an interdisciplinary PhD in Sustainability Science and Public Policy from the University of Sheffield, funded by a scholarship.
He encourages young people to set clear goals, find mentors, and persist, saying, “Surround yourself with the right people and never give up, even when the odds seem against you.”
