WAEC Nigeria has debunked claims of introducing a resit exam for WASSCE candidates, clarifying that the report originated from Ghana and does not apply to Nigerian candidates.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has refuted claims circulating in some Nigerian media outlets that it has introduced a resit examination for candidates needing make-up papers in the WASSCE.
WAEC Nigeria clarified that the report, which originated from Ghana, is not applicable to Nigerian candidates. The WAEC official quoted in the viral story, John Kapi, is a Ghanaian representative working with WAEC Ghana.
Since 2017, WAEC Nigeria has conducted its own first series of exams for private candidates, initiated during the tenure of Mr. Olu Adenipekun as Head of the National Office (HNO). This format was upheld by his successors, Patrick Areghan and the current HNO, Dr. Amos Dangut. These exams, held between February and March, are distinct from the May/June WASSCE for school-based candidates and the November/December private candidates’ exams (formerly GCE).
Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs for WAEC Nigeria, confirmed to Tribune Online that the resit report is misleading and unrelated to Nigerian candidates. She reiterated that WAEC Nigeria is prepared to conduct its scheduled first series of exams for private candidates as planned.
