A viral video showing a teacher maltreating a 3-year-old boy in an Ikorodu school has sparked outrage, prompting swift action from social media critic Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM).
The disturbing footage, recorded anonymously, captured the teacher slapping and yelling at the child while attempting to teach him how to write numbers. The video, shared widely online, has drawn condemnation from various quarters.
Reacting to the video, VDM expressed anger over the incident and demanded accountability from CHRIST-MITOTS International Schools, where the abuse occurred. In a post accompanying the video, VDM wrote:
“To the owners and board members of CHRIST-MITOTS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS, you have 24 hours to explain why one of your teachers is on tape committing this evil act against this poor boy.”
He also threatened to lead a protest to the school if the issue was not addressed, emphasizing the long-term effects of such treatment on children.
Following the public outcry, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed the arrest of the teacher, identified as Stella Nwadigo. The DSVA reiterated its commitment to protecting children and ensuring that incidents of abuse are met with appropriate consequences.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions on social media:
• “The hitting was too hard for a 3-year-old. It’s sad how people are acting surprised as if such treatment wasn’t common in our childhood,” one user commented.
• Another added, “The person filming without intervening is just as guilty as the teacher.”
• Others called for the teacher to be fired and the school to implement stricter measures to protect its pupils.
This incident has reignited conversations about child abuse in educational institutions, with many calling for systemic reforms to ensure children’s safety and well-being in schools.
