Nigerian Governor Declares Free Education for Female Indigenes from Primary to PhD

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has launched a free education initiative for female indigenes, covering all levels from primary school to PhD, to empower women, promote gender equality, and eliminate financial barriers to education.

The Jigawa State government, led by Governor Umar Namadi, has announced a groundbreaking initiative offering free education to female indigenes in state-owned institutions, spanning from primary school to PhD level.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Chamo, highlighted that this program aims to empower women through education and eliminate financial barriers that often hinder their academic aspirations. According to Chamo, the initiative is a significant step toward promoting gender equality and ensuring that women can contribute meaningfully to societal development.

“This program will have a lasting impact on the lives of our female students. By providing free education, the Jigawa State Government is equipping women with the tools to make informed decisions and uplift their communities,” Chamo stated.

The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Scholarships Board, Alhaji Sa’idu Magaji, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting female students, emphasizing that education is the key to unlocking their potential.

In addition to this initiative, Governor Namadi’s administration has previously distributed 30,000 school uniforms to senior secondary school girls, awarded scholarships to over 10,000 female students, and sponsored 121 girls to study medicine in Cyprus. Over N1 billion has also been invested in renovating 12 girls’ secondary schools, and resources such as exercise books have been distributed to further encourage girl-child enrollment and retention in schools.

This bold policy follows similar education reforms in other states like Abia and Anambra, where free education has been declared to promote accessibility and retention in public schools.
