Ugandan Educator Secures Fully Funded Chevening Scholarship for MA in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex

Ugandan educator Rabecca Chelangat secured the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex, highlighting her dedication to refugee education and equitable learning opportunities.

A Ugandan educator, Rabecca Chelangat, has been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, enabling her to pursue a Master of Arts in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex, UK. With a strong background in teaching and advocacy for refugee education, Chelangat’s achievement underscores her dedication to equitable and quality education.

Chelangat, widely known as Becky, has spent the past seven years working with refugees in Northern Uganda, advocating for their rights through adult and mainstream education. Her commitment to ensuring access to education for both refugees and host communities inspired her to further her studies in international education and development.

The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, fully covers tuition fees, travel expenses, and living costs. Chelangat’s selection as a recipient highlights her exceptional academic background and dedication to educational reform.

Chelangat holds a Bachelor of Arts with Education from Makerere University, Uganda, where she majored in English Language and Literature, graduating with a GPA of 3.65 (Second Class Honours, Lower Division). Her undergraduate studies provided a strong foundation for her work in refugee education, directly aligning with her current academic pursuit.

While applying to the University of Sussex, Chelangat relied on the institution’s website for guidance, particularly in crafting a compelling personal statement. Having completed her education in English, she was exempt from English language proficiency tests.

Chelangat described the Chevening Scholarship application process as highly demanding, requiring extensive research, preparation, and time commitment. She credited Uganda’s Chevening officers, scholars, and alumni for their invaluable support through webinars and mentorship, which helped her refine her essays. She also emphasized the importance of seeking feedback from others to improve the quality of her application.

According to Chelangat, authenticity played a key role in her success. She focused on sharing her personal experiences and passion for education rather than making vague statements. Her ability to clearly articulate her impact and future aspirations made her application compelling.

Reflecting on her journey, Chelangat noted that if she had to go through the process again, she would give herself more grace and actively seek guidance from previous scholarship recipients. She advised prospective applicants to believe in themselves, approach the process with determination, and take advantage of available resources and mentorship opportunities.

“Do it as though your life depends on it because if you don’t do your part, nothing will be done,” she emphasized. “There are so many opportunities out there, but you will only discover them if you take the first step.”

Chelangat’s achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring scholars, demonstrating that with dedication, authenticity, and perseverance, global educational opportunities are within reach.
