Students of the University of Cross River State protested in Calabar after three students and their driver died following an accident, blaming alleged negligence at General Hospital Calabar, which led to clashes with police and disruption of hospital activities.

Tension gripped Calabar on Monday as angry students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) staged protests following the deaths of three students and their driver, which they blamed on alleged negligence at the General Hospital Calabar.
The protest began at the university campus and moved along Mary Slessor Avenue to the hospital, where demonstrators vandalized property, including signboards. They later advanced to the Governor’s Office, where they confronted heavily armed police officers.
During the clash, several students sustained injuries, while the situation escalated, forcing hospital workers to abandon their duties out of fear of possible attacks.
Reports indicate that the victims had been involved in a serious road accident over the weekend while returning from an official trip to Akwa Ibom State. Students alleged that upon arrival at the hospital, the victims were not attended to promptly, leading to their deaths.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident and stated that security operatives had brought the situation under control. Officers later dispersed the protesters as tensions continued to rise.
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about emergency response and healthcare services in the state.
