19-Year-Old Homeless Teen Named Elijah Hogan Graduates as Valedictorian, Wins Full Scholarship to U.S. University

Elijah Hogan, a 19-year-old homeless teen from Houston, overcame adversity to graduate as valedictorian with a 3.93 GPA, earning a full-ride scholarship to Xavier University, where he plans to study graphic design and pursue his dream of publishing a comic book.

allscho Elijah Hogan, a determined and inspiring 19-year-old from Houston, Texas, has overcome incredible odds to achieve academic excellence. Despite the severe hardship of becoming homeless just a year before his high school graduation, Elijah earned one of the highest honors at Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, where he graduated with a remarkable 3.93 GPA. His academic journey wasn’t just about grades; it was a story of resilience in the face of overwhelming challenges. Elijah’s life took a dramatic turn when his grandmother’s lease expired and they were forced to leave their home. With no other option, he made the courageous decision to live independently, seeking shelter at the Covenant House, a homeless shelter specifically for youth and young adults.

The support from the Covenant House was crucial to Elijah’s success, providing him with a safe space to focus on his education and personal growth. At the shelter, he had access to food, a bed, and essential support services. He attributed much of his academic success to the positive environment fostered by both the Covenant House staff and his high school teachers, who helped him navigate the difficulties of homelessness. Elijah’s case manager, Jarkayla Cobb, played a pivotal role in guiding him through moments of self-doubt, ensuring that he stayed on track and never lost sight of his goals.

Elijah’s story of perseverance became even more remarkable as he was named one of four Black male valedictorians in his graduating class, a testament to his unwavering dedication. Despite the emotional and mental toll of living through such personal struggles, Elijah’s commitment to his education never wavered. He has shared that the loss of his mother at the age of 12 motivated him to push through challenges, not only for himself but also for his grandmother, who had always been a strong support system for him.

When delivering his valedictory speech, Elijah spoke with humility and gratitude, acknowledging the many people who supported him along the way. He emphasized the importance of perseverance, urging anyone facing hardships to continue moving forward, no matter how tough the circumstances. “You are the bulldozer that could break your limitations. Keep pushing forward without any doubts,” he told his peers.

Elijah’s future is looking even brighter, as he has been awarded a full-ride scholarship to attend Xavier University, where he plans to major in graphic design. His aspirations extend beyond just earning a degree—he hopes to one day publish his own comic book, a dream he is determined to make a reality after graduation. Elijah’s journey serves as an incredible example of how, even in the face of adversity, one can find strength, achieve their dreams, and inspire others to never give up.
