The NYSC has clarified that Corper Raye’s certificate was withheld due to her failure to attend a mandatory biometric clearance, not because of her public criticism of the government.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has addressed the controversy surrounding Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Corper Raye, clarifying that the decision to withhold her certificate was due to missed clearance — not because of her criticisms of President Tinubu or the government.
In a statement released Sunday, the NYSC management refuted widespread claims on social media that Raye was being punished for a viral video in which she criticized the high cost of living in Nigeria.
“Contrary to false reports, the Corps Member’s Certificate of National Service (CNS) was not denied due to any political statements,” the NYSC said.
According to the statement, Raye is one of 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for disciplinary reasons. Specifically, her service year was extended by two months after she allegedly failed to attend the biometric clearance in April 2025 — a violation of NYSC regulations.
“This extension follows standard NYSC procedures as outlined in the Bye-Laws and is not unique to her case,” the statement added.
Raye, who served in Lagos State, had earlier taken to Instagram to claim she was unjustly denied her certificate during the collection exercise. She accused her Local Government Inspector of refusing to clear her, even though she claimed she was present for the April clearance.
The issue gained national attention after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar publicly criticized the NYSC’s actions, calling them “unacceptable” and demanding justice for the corps member. Similarly, activist Omoyele Sowore labeled the situation a “gross injustice” and pledged to support Raye.
Despite the public outcry, the NYSC insists that its actions are strictly procedural and not politically motivated.
