A Nigerian undergraduate has sparked outrage after alleging that a lecturer seized her phone in class and forced her to pay ₦10,000—despite her apologies and public pleas—before returning it, raising concerns about abuse of power in universities.

A Nigerian undergraduate student has sparked widespread outrage after sharing her painful experience with a lecturer who allegedly seized her phone in class and demanded money before returning it. The 300-level student explained that she was trying to silence her phone when the lecturer entered the class, but he assumed she was using it and took it away.
Despite waiting behind to explain and apologize, the lecturer refused to listen and instead demanded ₦10,000 before returning the phone. The student pleaded and even knelt down in front of her classmates, but the lecturer remained unmoved.
“I pleaded, I even had to kneel in front of all the final year students. He refused and said I was going to pay ₦10,000. I came back with ₦5,000 cash, he refused. I had to add another ₦5,000 before he gave me my phone,” she said.
The student’s story has sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians calling on the school authorities to investigate the situation. The incident has raised concerns about abuse of power and student harassment in tertiary institutions.
