UNN Medical School Secures Landmark Approval to Increase Admission Quota to 400

In a transformative development for medical education in Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has officially approved a massive upward review of the admission quota for the University of Nigeria (UNN) Medical School. The institution’s carrying capacity has been raised from 180 to 400 students.

The approval, granted on March 27, 2026, follows a rigorous re-accreditation exercise and months of strategic preparation by the University management. This decision positions UNN as the holder of the highest approved quota for medical training in the country.

The quota increase was the result of a formal appeal by the University Management, which cited a significant surge in demand from highly qualified candidates and a substantial investment in the institution’s Faculty of Clinical Sciences.

To verify these claims, an MDCN assessment team conducted an intensive onsite evaluation of the University’s facilities a few weeks ago. The inspectors focused on the availability of modern training equipment, laboratory standards, and the strength of the academic staff.

We had more than the basic facilities and human resources the Council required for the review,” stated Professor Christopher Bismarck Eke, the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences.

Dean Eke expressed profound gratitude to the stakeholders whose dedication paved the way for this milestone. He specifically recognized the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, the leadership of the College of Medicine, alumni, and the current staff and students.

The Dean noted that this achievement is not just a win for the University, but a critical step in addressing the national shortage of healthcare professionals. By more than doubling its intake, UNN aims to bolster Nigeria’s healthcare workforce with high-quality medical graduates.

With this new capacity, the University of Nigeria reinforces its status as a premier center for academic and professional development in West Africa. The expanded quota is expected to take effect immediately, providing hundreds of additional aspiring doctors the opportunity to pursue their training at the prestigious institution.
