A 64-year-old Nigerian-born father of five fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a registered nurse in the UK, inspiring others that it is never too late to pursue higher education and a new career.
A 64-year-old father of five, John Adesoye, has achieved his lifelong ambition of becoming a registered nurse, proving that it is never too late to pursue higher education and a new career.
Originally from Nigeria, Adesoye previously worked as an electronics technician in Greece before relocating to the United Kingdom in 2013. After settling in the UK, he decided to change careers and pursue healthcare because of his passion for helping people.
He began working as a healthcare assistant at Southmead Hospital in Bristol in 2014 while studying through a registered nurse degree apprenticeship at the University of the West of England (UWE). His determination and hard work have now earned him a position as a registered nurse at the same hospital.
Reflecting on his journey, Adesoye encouraged others not to let age stop them from chasing their dreams.
“If I can do it, others can too. People are more capable and stronger than they often believe,” he said.
He explained that although he enjoyed repairing electronic equipment in his previous career, caring for patients brings him even greater fulfilment.
“When I repaired broken electronic devices, I felt happy seeing them work again. But helping patients recover gives me even more joy and satisfaction,” he said.
During his apprenticeship, Adesoye gained experience in several hospital departments, including cardiology, accident and emergency (A&E), and intensive care, while balancing his studies with his hospital duties.
Despite completing his nursing qualification, he has no plans to stop learning. He hopes to pursue a master’s degree in the future if the opportunity becomes available.
According to him, beginning a higher education journey opens the door to many more opportunities.
“The moment you begin higher education, more opportunities continue to come your way. It’s never too late,” he said.
Throughout his apprenticeship, he spent one day each week studying at UWE’s Glenside Campus in Fishponds and the rest of the week working at Southmead Hospital.
His programme leaders, Jacqui Caskey and Caroline Bromwich, praised his commitment and resilience, noting that nursing apprentices successfully balance demanding studies with work, family responsibilities, and other caring commitments.
Professor Steve Hams, Chief Nursing Officer at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, also congratulated Adesoye, describing his achievement as an inspiring reminder that people can pursue their ambitions at any stage of life.
He said the entire team was proud of Adesoye’s accomplishment and hoped his story would encourage others to follow their dreams regardless of their age.
