Professor Lilian Salami, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, has stated that at least 500 students who had overstayed at the university have received an amnesty from the school’s Senate, enabling them to graduate from the institution.
She also said that in the 2018/2019 academic year, 125 students received first-class degrees and 2,794 students received second-class upper degrees, while in the 2019/2020 academic year, 157 students received first-class degrees and 2,631 students received second-class upper degrees.
As part of the activities to commemorate the 46th and 47th sessions of the University, the vice-chancellor expressed this at a briefing held in Benin on Monday.
According to the president, the event will also be used to commemorate the university’s 51st Founders’ Day and the Golden Jubilee celebration.
In her words: “The cases of more than 500 students who have overstayed in the university were looked into by the Senate and granted ‘amnesty’ to graduate from the system.
The VC added that the university would be conferring Honorary Doctorate Degree on Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma; Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Dr. Natalia Kanem; Mr. Oluwakemi Pinheiro, SAN; Dr. Thomas Illube, while the former Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Osayuki Oshodin, would be unveiled as Professor emeritus.
