A Nigerian teacher, Mrs. Faith Nwoye, who flogged a nine-year-old pupil to death, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison by a special court for Women and Children in Awka, Anambra state.

The incident occurred at Landmark International School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The pupil, Master Henry Okonkwo, died in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Awka after being beaten into a coma by Mrs. Nwoye. He has since been buried in his hometown of Igbakwu in Ayamelum Local Government Area.
In related news, Commissioner for Education Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh extended condolences to the Okonkwo family on behalf of the State Government and the education community. Represented by Mrs. Ifeoma Onyeneke, Director of Schools in the Ministry of Education, Chuma-Udeh lamented the loss of a promising young life that could have been avoided.
Chuma-Udeh also emphasized that such tragedies highlight the importance of enrolling children in approved schools with qualified teachers, reiterating Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s stance against the operation of illegal schools in the state.
