ASUU criticized what it perceives as the indifferent approach of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government towards academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities. This sentiment was expressed during an ongoing press briefing at the University of Abuja.
During the briefing, ASUU also objected to the recent salary increments of 35 per cent for professors and 25 per cent for other academic staff within the university system, viewing it as a precarious wage award subject to governmental withdrawal.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the President of ASUU, emphasized the prolonged period during which the Tinubu-led administration has been given ample time to address these concerns.
Furthermore, Osodeke highlighted ASUU’s distress over the Federal Government’s failure to appoint members to the Governing Councils of Federal universities, asserting that the dissolution of these councils was unlawful and contrary to established university principles.
According to reports from The Punch, the dissolution of governing councils across federal universities and other agencies and parastatals in the country was announced by the National Universities Commission on June 22, 2023.
This directive was preceded by a similar order from President Bola Tinubu three days earlier, mandating the dissolution of boards across all government parastatals, agencies, and companies.
