A remarkable story of determination and support has unfolded in Nigeria, as Joyce Imasuen Osaivbie, a blind girl adopted by former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole in 2011, has graduated with a Second Class Upper in Law from the University of Benin (UNIBEN). Joyce’s journey began when she was just nine years old, delivering a flawless Braille-prepared address at a disability rights lecture, impressing Oshiomhole with her eloquence.
Oshiomhole’s promise to adopt Joyce was more than just words; he ensured she had access to quality education, medical care, and specialized learning materials. Joyce excelled at Queen’s College, Lagos, and later gained admission to UNIBEN to study law. Oshiomhole’s support was instrumental, providing her with a laptop and ensuring her university years were stress-free.
Joyce’s achievement is a testament to her hard work and Oshiomhole’s dedication. “He made sure I was always comfortable… I am proud to say I made a 2.1,” she said. Her father, Michael Imasuen, expressed gratitude, saying Oshiomhole “lifted the burden from me and the child never looked back”.
Oshiomhole praised Joyce’s determination, saying, “The sky is your starting point in life.” The Executive Director of NAPVID, Melody Omosah Esq, commended Oshiomhole’s genuine relationship with Joyce, devoid of politics.
Joyce’s story symbolizes how empathy, opportunity, and determination can transform lives. Would you like to know more about Joyce’s plans after graduation or Oshiomhole’s advocacy for disability rights?
