22-year-old Joy Watson graduated as the top student at Virginia State University with dual degrees in Mathematics and Engineering, a perfect GPA, and multiple leadership roles, earning a full scholarship for her master’s and aiming for a Ph.D. to become a professor.


Joy Watson, a 22-year-old student, has been named the best graduating student at Virginia State University, USA, after earning two bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering Technology, along with a minor in Dance.
Her academic success is only part of her impressive university journey. While maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, Joy also served as the 94th Miss Virginia State University, joined honor societies and fellowships, led student organizations, interned at top companies, and dedicated her time to community service.
She was an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers, where she rose from senator to president, successfully rebuilding the group post-pandemic. Joy also won the title of 2023 Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame.
In recognition of her achievements, Joy received a fully funded 12-month scholarship to pursue a Master of Science in Mathematics at her alma mater. After completing her master’s program, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. and become a professor.
