Collecting WAEC, NECO fees, not your only responsibility – Imo Commissioner to School Principals

The Imo State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Prof. B.G Nworgu has decried the ugly trend where School Principals only focus on collecting WAEC and NECO fees.

He warned that aside from flipping through files, school principals ought to provide academic direction for teachers and ensure they dish out adequate knowledge to the students.

Nworgu gave the advice at the state secretariat Owerri on Thursday while addressing the Federal delegation and principals of the various schools on behalf of the State Government.

The Commissioner thanked the Federal Government on behalf of Governor Hope Uzodimma for finding Imo worthy of being the only state in the South East to receive the first tranche of Technology Story Board(TSB) Posters and Booklets from the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion.

He noted during his speech that the importance of Science, Technology and Innovation to national development is a fact that cannot be controverted, stating that powerful and economically vibrant countries are those that have made correspondingly high investments in science, technology, innovation and education.”

He said ”Research evidence has shown that the level of development and posterity of a nation correlates positively with the nation’s investments in these areas, he said.

Analysing the import of the Technology Story Board, Prof Nworgu said most people have criticised the quality of education being offered in schools on the basis of the fact that it is always knowledge-based without any industry relevance.

He pointed that in a world that is technology-driven acquiring knowledge and ideas without transforming them into products is of no value.

He promised to sponsor students who show meaningful engagements in production and innovations to the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology EXPO coming up next year.

Earlier, the representative of the DG National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, Mr. Dagogo George said the Technology Story Board initiative is a concept initiated by the Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) in collaboration with some industries for purposes of technology transfer.

Lending his voice, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr John Uzoma thanked the federal agency for choosing Imo as the pilot state in the South East.

He noted that the Technology Story Board will stimulate creative thinking in young students and will equally assist teachers to communicate properly with the students in the teaching of Science and technology-based subjects.

The Principal of Government Technical College, Owerri, Mr Ahatara Simeon, speaking on behalf of his colleagues promised that they will put the materials into good use so that the lofty ideals of the initiative will be attained.
