The College of Education, Zing has denied allegations of irregular staff promotions, asserting that its transparent, merit-based process complies with official guidelines and includes oversight from government and union representatives.

The College of Education, Zing in Taraba State, has strongly denied allegations recently published by a national newspaper, which accused the institution of engaging in irregular staff promotions.
In a formal statement issued by the college’s Director of Information, Boniface Yakubu, the accusations were labeled “baseless, frivolous, unfounded, and untrue.” The statement was made available to The Guardian correspondent in Taraba.
Initially opting not to comment, the college said it chose to respond in order to safeguard its integrity and inform the public.
According to Yakubu, the promotion process at the institution is transparent and merit-driven, involving four main stages:
- The College Management
- The Expanded Management Committee
- The Appointments and Promotions Committee (A&PC)
- The Governing Council
He emphasized that the Expanded Management Committee includes representatives from the Ministries of Education, Justice, and Finance, along with members of the Academic Board and union leaders from COEASU and NASU. Each promotion is reviewed against the Revised Scheme of Service (January 2020).
“In instances where the Governing Council is not in place, the Ministry of Education steps in to vet and approve promotion cases. Otherwise, all recommendations go through the A&PC before final approval by the Governing Council,” Yakubu noted.
The statement addressed specific allegations such as:
- Skipping qualified staff in the promotion process
- Promoting junior staff over seniors
- Advancing staff under disciplinary review
- Influence by the Governing Council chairman
All these claims were categorically denied by the college.
Professor Ejika Sambo, Provost of the College, urged staff to voice grievances through internal channels rather than anonymous media reports. He also stressed the need for unity and collaboration in driving the institution’s mission, in alignment with Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas’ educational vision.
The college reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness, and academic integrity in all its administrative operations.
